Former junior world champ suspended for missed doping tests
2019 junior world time trial champion Aigul Gareeva has been provisionally suspended from racing after missing three anti-doping tests.
Irakli Abrahamyan, the head coach of Russia’s national cycling team, told Russian news agency TASS that the 20-year-old Russian had missed three ‘Whereabouts’ tests over the course of a year, earning her a stint on the sidelines.
“She was not found to have [been] doping,” Abrahamyan said, according to Inside the Games. “Gareeva was suspended for another violation which was the result of her carelessness, one might say.
“[Her case] will be heard soon after which a decision on her punishment will be made. I hope that Aigul will be disqualified for a minimum period.”
Gareeva impressed in 2018 when, as a 16-year-old, she won the junior women’s road race at the European Continental Championships by more than six minutes. Joining her on the podium that day were now-WorldTour riders Vittoria Guazzini and Hannah Ludwig.
A year later, at the Yorkshire World Championships, Gareeva won the U19 women’s time trial, despite taking a wrong turn in the closing kilometres.

In 2020 and 2021 Gareeva raced for Russian Continental team Cogeas-Mettler Pro Cycling, taking several podium finishes at small one-day races around Europe.
Gareeva’s last race was the Russian National Championships road race in June 2021 where she finished fourth. According to TASS, Gareeva has been provisionally suspended since September 17, 2021.
According to the website of the International Testing Agency (ITA), the organisation that manages anti-doping programs for cycling and a range of other sports, missing three Whereabouts tests will result in a ban of between 12 and 24 months for a first offence.
