Sagan fined for injuring police officer after breaking COVID-19 curfew in April
Peter Sagan has reportedly been fined for injuring a police officer in an April incident that occurred when he was stopped for violating Monaco’s COVID-19 curfew.
According to the Nice-Matin newspaper, the three-time world champion and his brother Juraj were returning from a night out with Juraj driving when they were stopped by police for violating the curfew. When asked to step out of the vehicle, a reportedly intoxicated Peter Sagan struggled, apparently leaving on one of the officers with an injured hand. According to Nice-Matin, Sagan was afraid he would be “forced to be vaccinated.”
He was taken to a police station and spent several hours there, and later said he had no memory of what had happened and apologized.
Sagan was ordered to pay a fine of €5,000 for the altercation with police and €100 for violating curfew.
Shortly after reports of the incident emerged on Monday, Sagan addressed the situation on social media.
“Regarding the news that appeared today related to the night of April 25th, I wish to take this opportunity to convey my most sincere apologies,” Sagan said. “It was an ugly experience that made me think profoundly and draw valuable lessons. I am truly sorry for this incident which will not happen again.”
