Ineos roster set for 2022 with renewals for Swift, Wurf, and others
Cameron Wurf and Ben Swift are among those who will ride on with the Ineos Grenadiers in 2022 as the team has announced a handful of contract renewals.
Swift, 34, signed a two-year renewal that will take him through what will be his 12th year with the squad across two separate stints. He joined the Sky team in its inaugural season, 2010, and rode with the organization through the 2016 season before a two-year stretch with UAE Team Emirates. In 2019, he returned to Sky and has been with the squad since. In his first stint with Sky, he racked up six victories at the WorldTour level and finished on the Milan-San Remo podium twice. Since rejoining the team, he had won two of the last three British national road titles.
“This team has always been home to me. I’ve spent so much of my career here and I feel like I keep growing,” he said. “I keep developing, keep learning, and that’s something this team is incredibly good at. We never sit on our laurels. Now I’m really excited by this young group of riders coming through and I want to help them progress, while getting the best out of myself, doing the best for the team, and helping push these young guys on. It’s very exciting.”
Wurf, 38, will stick with the team for another year as he continues to combine his road racing career with his triathlon ambitions. The Australian joined the team in 2020 after a hiatus from the WorldTour peloton, having last raced on the road for a top-division team with Cannondale in 2014.
“Ironman is a very individual sport but I never feel like that now, with the team behind me – even though I’m out there on my own. I love the fact that I can go and do that and then come back to help the team in a role I really love,” Wurf said in a statement. “It’s so fulfilling to be able to play the role of domestique and help our guys win. It motivates me to go and win myself in Ironman and the guys really make me feel special. They seem to genuinely admire what I do and that pushes me to do even more. It’s a great environment to be around and I want to be here as long as I’m making a meaningful contribution. This year I’ll hopefully take another step forward in my contribution to the team.”
Key Grand Tour domestique and five-time Spanish national time trial champ Jonathan Castroviejo also extended with the squad for a further two seasons, as did longtime team member Salvatore Puccio, while Colombian youngster Brandon Rivera signed a one-year extension. Announced a day after a long-expected extension for Geraint Thomas, Tuesday’s renewals will be the last for the team ahead of the 2022 season, with the Ineos Grenadiers announcing that their roster is now complete with 31 riders.
