2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

There’s just over one week left to submit your photographs for the 2021 edition of the Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year awards.

Don’t forget that every entry is making a difference. Your entry fee goes toward the worthy cause of cancer research through Tour de Cure and the Young Cyclist Assistance, which will provide up to two cyclists with financial support to help them reach their goals.

So far, dozens of professional photographers, amateurs, and avid cyclists from all over the world have shared their photographs and their personal moments with us. It’s been a privilege to view them all.

And, it’s as much about the story behind the image as it is about the picture itself. We implore you to read the captions and understand the meaning the image had for each photographer.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the photos from our first and second showcases.

Professional category

The professional category is open to all photographers that make a living from their work. They are competing for prestige and honor, along with the perpetual trophy and medallions.

“Riders scouting possible routes for Grounded Nebraska (@grounded.ne) make their way down a narrow dirt road between cornfields looking for the spirit of gravel adventure in the heartland of America. The Grounded Nebraska Gravel Festival will make its debut in 2022 and combine elements of racing, riding, adventuring, and family fun to create an open and welcoming environment for all who ride bikes.” Nathan and Morleigh Schneeberger @snowymountainphotography

Wout van Aert riding solo at Cyclocross World Cup in Val di Sole. I like how lonely he looks but at the same time he’s not because he’s surrounded by crowds. Two worlds, he and them that merge together in one place.” Chiara Redaschi @chiara_redaschi

“For the first time in history, women had their own Paris-Roubaix. I took this picture shortly after the finish, Elisa had just gotten off the bus to go to the showers. The expression on her face shows the hardness of the race, to be honest, I could make a post-race album of Elisa, so often she gives more than 100% to each race and finishes completely exhausted.” Thomas Maheux @thomas_maheux

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“Theo Reinhardt, Felix Gross, Leon Rohde, and Domenic Weinstein of Team Germany during the men’s team pursuit qualifying on day 10 of the Tokyo Olympics.” Justin Setterfield @justinsetters

“Everybody’s new hero. Ethan Hayter tackles the top of the Michaelgate climb at the British national championships whilst a young fan cheers him on at the top of his lungs. Based on the year that Ethan had, this kid could well be hooked for life on cycling now.” Luis Alcantarilla @eltoromediadotcom

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“Tim Declercq (Deceuninck–Quick-Step) after stage 13 of the 2021 Tour de France. Tim fell hard early in the race and had to fight the entire day to get to the finish in time. Luckily he did, but he was completely exhausted after crossing the finish line.” Gregory Van Gansen @gregoryVG_Photography

“This year, I had also the privilege to photograph the action during the 2021 Australian National Road Championships in Ballarat, Australia with the para-cycling races. These incredible athletes deserve all our attention. They are the best people that I have ever seen, always smiling in their efforts and ride, always looking after each other. It is the race for their own challenge and to reach their own limit. They are really the best riders on this planet.” Jean-Pierre Ronco @imagewriterphotohraphy

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“My first time ever on a cyclocross race and what a race! It was the World Cup at Besançon. It was cold, snowy, cold again, and sliiiiiiippery. But that’s what we love isn’t it?” Louis Legon @louislegon

Amateur category

The Amateur category is open to non-professional photographers using high-end cameras, and anyone with a smartphone or drone, or action camera. The first prize in this category wins a Wahoo Elemnt Kickr, the second prize wins a Wahoo Elemnt Roam, and the third prize wins a Wahoo Elemnt Rival.

“The final night of Fifth Street Cross in Emmaus, PA had epic rain and a 25-degree temperature shift occurred during the race. The race is at night and I thought I could capture the riders as they pass by the scoring tent. I tried a shutter speed (1/160) that would enhance the raindrops but also capture the riders suffering in the moment.” Gabe Lloyd @thegabelloyd

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“Chasing foliage in Minnewaska State Park.” Roman Siromakha @romanshotthis

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“This is a shot of Lance Haidet, who races for Legion of Los Angeles, at the Really Rad Festival of Cyclocross on Cape Cod. It was the beginning of the golden hour and the low sun lit him perfectly as he came out of a dark corner. I chose to make it black & white to get rid of the noise and focus on the details.” Katie Busick @katiebusickphotography

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“Summer 2021, the Suisse elite road championship.” Maurizio Barzaghi @hilbarza

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“Capturing sunrise on day one of the Super Spartan Gravel ride; a 600km three-day journey of trails, hike-a-bike and a little road from Fremantle, Washington to the Margaret River. This was the first edition of the gravel event. Fifteen intrepid riders set off from Fremantle on what turned out to be an epic but exhausting adventure taking in some incredible parts of our beautiful South West. This was a moment of peace and reflection on how lucky we are to have the freedom and safety to ride here.” Philip Stevens @pippystevens

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“The morning I took this photo it was just me and a Mom and young son of maybe 4 years old at Point Judith in Rhode Island, USA. I was facing the opposite direction when the little boy screamed “look what the sky is doing”. Look I did, and inspiration followed. Three people witnessed this and I was one, but only because of my bike…and that boy.” Andy Perrin

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“Battle of Great Orme: Stage 4 of The Tour of Britain tackled the steep slopes of the Great Orme and the cut and thrust of the top riders didn’t disappoint as the riders fought to conquer the climb as well as each other! I managed to get a great vantage point from a friendly couple’s balcony, watching the decisive move coming from Michael Woods on the steepest section of the climb with only Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe able to follow. A terrific stage played out in front of a huge crowd!” Hugh McManus @hughmcmanus8

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“This might be just another banal bike picture, but try it with some random cat I just met in Spanish little town.” Szymon Kotowski @szymonbike

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“Alma, just a few minutes before the start of her very first race, just 2 months after learning how to ride a real bike.” Jan Mühlethaler @herr_roja

2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: Showcase 3

“To me, this demonstrates how difficult Zwift riding is, often more challenging than actual road bike racing as the rider needs to be constantly alert and cannot ‘coast’.” Dean Koh @deankohbiker
